Today, Wadern is the central hub for middle, shopping, education, and administration in the Hochwald region. Every day, many people from the surrounding and wider Hochwald area experience the city's appealing and comprehensive service strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, Wadern is always a place of relaxation. It's so beautifully idyllic, located in Saarland, and surrounded by large forests and near some great Seen<\/strong><\/a>. You can also quickly get to Trier, the oldest city in Germany, and also quickly to Saarbr\u00fccken, the state capital, if you want to go on a shopping spree. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the summer, the market square becomes the stage for music, children's programs, and cabaret under the title \u201eWaderner Marktsommer.\u201c Culinary highlights are offered by the \u201eKartoffeltage Saar-Hunsr\u00fcck\u201c (Saar-Hunsr\u00fcck Potato Days) and the \u201eHochw\u00e4lder Wildwoche\u201c (Hochwald Game Week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of Wadern, the town in the Hochwald, dates back to the year 950, when it was first mentioned in connection with the Mettlach Abbey. Later, Count Anton von Oettingen-S\u00f6tern moved there and helped the community gain greater prominence by granting it market rights. After the end of World War I, Wadern became the administrative seat of Merzig-Wadern in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles of 1920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After World War II, in 1945, Wadern began its most recent chapter as part of the French occupation zone. Wadern belonged to the separatized Saarland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The present-day town of Wadern has only existed since 1978. Before the municipal reform of 1974, the districts belonged to various other municipalities, including Weiskirchen and Nonnweiler. After this municipal reform, the municipality of Wadern was established. It was only on July 1, 1978, that the municipality became the town of Wadern. Today, it has just over 16,000 inhabitants and consists of 13 districts. The largest are the Wadern district and the Nunkirchen district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the city of Wadern is very small in population, it is the third largest municipality in the Saarland in terms of area. The city is characterized by the three valley basins with their associated streams; these are the Primstal, the Wadrilltal, and the L\u00f6stertal. Wadern lies on the edge of the Schwarzw\u00e4lder Hochwald and is located in the Saar-Hunsr\u00fcck Nature Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Wadern has town privileges, the association is more comparable to a municipality. In total, the town in the Hochwald with the Wadern webcam consists of 13 districts. The population of these districts ranges from 350 to 2500 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The districts are scenically characterized villages of varying sizes. This spatial distance to the city center lends the city of Wadern a certain charm, as each district has something unique and cultivates its own cultural life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The districts are predominantly located in the river valleys: Wadrilltal, L\u00f6stertal, and Primstal. In the Wadrill valley are the districts of Wadrill, Gehweiler, Wedern, Wadern, and Dagstuhl. In the L\u00f6ster valley are L\u00f6stertal and a part of Dagstuhl. In the Prims valley are the districts of Krettnich, Lockweiler, Bardenbach, B\u00fcschfeld, and Nunkirchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining districts Steinberg, Morscholz, and Noswendel lie outside of these valleys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In B\u00fcschfeld, I mostly attended family gatherings. Not much else connects me to this town. There's also a youth club here where I actually DJed once or twice before I turned 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of those places you just pass through. But for me, it was different. I completed my apprenticeship there and often visited Dagstuhl Castle. There weren't as many festivals there back then as there are today, but it was wonderful to just walk there and linger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krettnich and Lockweiler are practically inseparable. You always walk through Krettnich when you go hiking around Lockweiler. It's a small, idyllic place with great people and many friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I grew up in Lockweiler and spent the first 25 years of my life there. Lockweiler and the surrounding area had everything you needed as a child, teenager, and young adult. The people here are super nice, accommodating, and friendly. Here, people greet each other on the street, which is not the norm in many other places in the world. I think that's great, and it always feels good to walk through Lockweiler and meet friends and old acquaintances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everything goes ideally, we'll be here by the fair weekend in early October. You'll get to meet everyone all at once that weekend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An idyllic place with a lake, located right next to Wadern. We even stayed in a vacation apartment there once. The lake itself is not very big, but especially when the kids were younger, we often walked around it. The circular path goes through the Noswendel Jungle<\/a><\/strong>, as we call him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I've been here a few times before for the lake festival or for school trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, it's just a place to drive through. Either to get to Lebach or to Losheim. We used to drive through Nunkirchen every weekend to get to the discos. It was also once on my way to school and there was a video store in Nunkirchen. Before the days of Netflix and the like, that was the place to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I've been to Steinberg quite a few times. Even once or twice for Carnival. It's one of those places you go to if you have friends there. Otherwise, there isn't much to do in Steinberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town in the high forest. With the Wadern webcam, you can get a good look at what's going on in Wadern's market square. I went to high school here and was therefore in Wadern almost every day. As mentioned above, the town is great and always worth a visit. We go to Wadern every time too, to visit friends, go shopping, or enjoy the coziness of the town over a coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Wadrill there is the Hochwald Alm. We always drove past there when we went to the disco. Otherwise, there is or was a big funfair here, which I only visited a few times. So I wasn't here very often, except when driving by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our graduation\/prom took place in Wedern. Although I ultimately didn't finish my Abitur in Wadern, I still participated in the celebration here. Otherwise, Wedern is usually a small village you bypass to the left on your way to Wadrill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 1978, when Wadern became a town | Historical Impressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The year 1978 is a very special one for Wadern. As mentioned above, the former municipality of Wadern officially became the town of Wadern on July 1, 1978. It is all the more wonderful that historical pictures from exactly this year have now been sent to me. They show Wadern in a state that many younger residents today no longer know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you look at the pictures and compare them with the current view of the Wadern webcam on the market square, it is immediately noticeable how much the town in the Hochwald has developed in the last good 45 years. Shops have come and gone, facades have been renovated, the cityscape has been modernized, and yet the character of Wadern has been preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me personally, these recordings are a small piece of local history. They show the Wadern where my parents and grandparents used to go, the streets I later walked as a student on my way to high school, and the squares where generations of Hochw\u00e4lders have met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
