Victoria is the capital and is located exactly in the middle of the island. In winter, it's around 8 degrees Celsius here, and in summer, it rarely exceeds 30 degrees. However, the sun is very strong here, so you should be prepared accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The locations are sorted alphabetically and the list should be kept up-to-date for the coming years. \ud83d\ude42 Fontana is located on the eastern edge of the capital city, Victoria, and has about 900 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name \u201eFontana\u201c is derived from a spring (\u201efontana\u201c means \u201espring\u201c in Italian) that locals have used for centuries to irrigate their fields. The official name of the locality is \u201eIl-Fontana,\u201c but it is also known as \u201eIt-Triq tal-G\u0127ajn,\u201c which means \u201eStreet of the Spring.\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Near the village entrance is the old public wash house, dating back to the time when Fontana was primarily known for its spring. This wash house is still in use and stands as a remarkable testament to the traditional way of life in Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghajnsielem is located on the southeastern tip of Gozo, near the ferry that connects Gozo and Malta. Around 3,200 people live here. The neighboring islands of Comino and Cominotto also belong to the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name Ghajnsielem means \u201ePeaceful Spring\u201c and comes from a spring that served as the main water source for the locality in the past. The locality was officially founded in 1855.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This impressive church in the heart of Ghajnsielem is known for its beautiful architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Additionally, right in front of the church, there are always wonderful installations for Christmas, Easter, and special holidays in general. A particular highlight is the 19-meter-high Christmas tree that is put up here every year. It is made of approximately 4,500 glass bottles and is beautifully illuminated with 7,000 light bulbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gharb is located in the west of Gozo and is one of the island's oldest villages. Approximately 1,300 people live here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gharb was founded as an independent municipality in 1679. The name \u201eGharb\u201c means \u201eWest\u201c in Arabic, indicating the village's location on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the most important religious sites in Malta and Gozo. The Basilica of Ta\u2018 Pinu is known for its impressive architecture and its significant role as a place of worship and pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A beautiful little \u201eCraft Village\u201c located west of Gharb, on the road to St. Lawrence. Traditional Gozitan crafts are exhibited here, and you can buy Gozo salt packaged in pretty little jute bags. The ideal souvenir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The famous Azure Window sadly collapsed in a storm in 2017. Unfortunately, I never got to see it in person, but I have visited the Wied il-Miela\u0127 Window multiple times. It is at least as impressive as the Azure Window. It's a limestone arch window, very close to the Saltpans of Gozo. You can easily plan a hike from Gharb here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a significant religious edifice in Gharb. The impressive building, constructed between 1699 and 1729, is built in the Baroque style and sits at the heart of the village of Gharb. The basilica is most renowned for its rich interior, which includes a number of ornate frescoes and statues. With its rich historical heritage and spiritual significance, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a must-see for anyone visiting Gharb and the island of Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the winter, there's even an ice skating rink in front of the church, made of artificial ice, of course. But our kids had a lot of fun here. We've been to the ice rink countless times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghasri is located in the west of Gozo and is the smallest village on the island, with a population of about 525 inhabitants. It is even the second smallest locality in Malta. Ghasri is nestled between the hills of i\u017c-\u017bebbu\u0121 and G\u0127ammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name has Arabic origins and is likely linked to the verb \u201ato press,\u2018 suggesting this could be an area where olives were pressed for oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The village church, designed by a local priest, Dun Guzepp Diacono, was built in the early twentieth century (1903-16) and is dedicated to Christ the Redeemer. The village was established as an independent parish in 1921.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This striking lighthouse is located on a hill near Ghasri. From there, you have a magnificent view of the whole of Gozo. We are looking directly at the lighthouse from our parking spot; it's still active. However, thanks to GPS, nobody uses the lighthouse for navigation anymore, of course. It is the only lighthouse on Gozo. There are beautiful hiking trails from Ghasri and the surrounding villages up to the lighthouse. I once walked the route from Zebbug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This narrow, deep valley leads to a secluded bay popular with swimmers and divers. The steep cliffs and crystal-clear water make it a unique spot for a refreshing dip. The bay is truly idyllic and a great photo stop for anyone traveling on Gozo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This small but impressive church in the center of Ghasri is a beautiful example of religious architecture on Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kercem lies southwest of Victoria, the capital of Gozo, and borders the picturesque Lunzjata Valley. Around 1,700 people live here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name Kercem likely derives from the Maltese word \u201eKremin,\u201c referring to the blooming vineyards that once covered the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I will add to this list shortly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Marsalforn is located on the north coast of Gozo and is one of the island's most popular seaside resorts. 1,200 people live here year-round, but this number is significantly exceeded in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The history of Marsalforn dates back to the Roman era, and by the 16th century, its harbor played a significant role for Gozo. From here, food was loaded from Sicily, and travelers took passage to ports like Licata and others in Europe. The importance of Marsalforn grew so significantly in the late 16th and early 17th centuries that the Knights of St. John, the then rulers of Malta, considered dismantling the old Citadel of Gozo in the center of the island and building a new city above the harbor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n However, due to the resistance of the residents of Gozo, this plan was never realized. They argued that they had too few financial resources to raise further taxes to fund the move, and the challenges of relocating from Victoria Rabat to Marsalforn would be too great. With the rise of M\u0121arr as the ferry port between Gozo and Malta and the construction of defensive towers to secure the waterways between Gozo and Malta, Marsalforn lost its importance and remained for many centuries as a quiet fishing village inhabited only by fishermen and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This bay is a popular spot for swimming, diving, and boating. There are also numerous restaurants and cafes along the promenade, serving fresh fish and seafood. A small beach invites sunbathing. We love spending our afternoons here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mgarr is located on the southeast coast of Gozo and is the island's main ferry port, with regular connections to the main island of Malta. Fewer than 500 residents live here, as it is purely a harbor area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mgarr was once a quiet fishing village, but it has since developed into a bustling harbor area with the construction of the modern ferry terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harbor itself is the main attraction here. In addition to the yachts and boats to admire in the summer, there are also some very good restaurants and a grand hotel with a great view of the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An impressive fortress on a hill above the harbor, built in the mid-18th century. Today, it houses a luxury residential complex and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Munxar is located in the south of the island of Gozo and borders the village of Sannat. Munxar has a population of approximately 1,200 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name Munxar means \u201esaw\u201c in German, and the teeth of a saw are also visible in the village's coat of arms. It is a relatively new village, founded only in the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From here, you can start many beautiful trails. From here, you'll either walk along the coast or pass through beautiful villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nadur is located in the east of Gozo and is one of the largest municipalities here. Approximately 4,500 inhabitants live here year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name Nadur, derived from the Maltese word \u201enadur,\u201c means \u201eview\u201c and refers to the viewpoints on the town's hills, which offer a wide vista of the sea and surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This botanical garden and watchtower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Gozo, Comino, and mainland Malta. The tower was originally built as a telegraph station and now serves as a viewpoint. It is the only botanical garden in Gozo and is especially recommended in the months of March to early May, as the whole island is beautifully green then. One of the best sights in Gozo in spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just a short drive from Nadur, this wide sandy beach is one of the most beautiful and popular in Gozo, and even in Malta. The bay is known for its red sand and crystal-clear waters, and is a great place for swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking. Ramla Beach is the largest beach in Gozo and we come here at least once a week. At least in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Tal-Mixta Cave is known not only for its natural beauty but also for the breathtaking view of Ramla Bay and Ramla Beach. The Tal-Mixta Cave is often mistaken for Calypso's Cave, which is currently closed to the public. If you are driving from Nadur towards Ramla Beach, turn right towards the cave. There is a small parking lot about 300 meters before the cave entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Da\u0127let Qorrot Beach is a secluded beach (hidden gem!!) in the north of the island. The bay is quite cool and has crystal clear, deep blue water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Adjacent to the beach are traditional fishermen's huts carved into the limestone cliffs, which give the place a special charm. With its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty, Da\u0127let Qorrot is a perfect retreat for relaxation and enjoying nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Qala is located in the east of Gozo and is the easternmost village on the island. It overlooks the Maltese island of Comino and the blue sea in between. Qala is the village furthest from the capital, Victoria, and closest to the rest of the Maltese archipelago. Approximately 2,000 people live here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Qala is first mentioned in a 15th-century portolan in the Vatican Library. Its name refers to the \u201aQala\u2018 (\u201aharbour\u2018) of \u0126ondoq ir-Rummien. The development of the present settlement began in the second half of the 17th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Except for a few protected bays like \u0126ondoq ir-Rummien, the coast of Qala is mostly rugged. Sea caves along the coast, including G\u0127ar Minka, are only accessible by boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This small bay is popular with locals and tourists alike for swimming and snorkeling. It offers a magnificent view of the island of Comino and the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sannat is located in the southern part of Gozo and is known for its impressive coastal cliffs. Currently, approximately 2,100 people live in Sannat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sannat is known for its old farmhouses and mills, as well as for the Ta\u2018 \u010aen\u010b cliffs, which are protected as an archaeological site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These spectacular cliffs are a nature reserve and home to a variety of birds. They offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and are a popular hiking spot. By the way, I can recommend the hike from Xlendi. You walk beautifully along the coast on small but well-maintained hiking trails that end at the Sanap Cliffs. From here, you can walk back to Xlendi via country paths and the road. A beautiful hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Santa Lu\u010bija borders Victoria and Ker\u010bem. Only about 300 inhabitants live here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The village was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse, an early Christian martyr. The residents of Santa Lucia are proud of their village and keep its traditions alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The area was once known for its freshwater springs and is still one of the greenest areas on Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n San Lawrenz is located in the west of Gozo, with a population of about 750 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n San Lawrenz is one of two villages on Gozo that have adopted their names from their patron saint. The other is the nearby hamlet of Santa Lu\u010bija. San Lawrenz was elevated to parish on March 15, 1893. Prior to this date, the area was known as Ta\u2018 \u010aangura, likely after a local family name or nickname. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The exact founding date of this area is unknown, but the name Ta\u2018 \u010aangura can be traced back before the Siege of Gozo, i.e., before July 1551.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dwejra Bay is arguably the most famous attraction in San Lawrenz. This is where the \u201eAzure Window,\u201c an iconic rock arch, was located, but it unfortunately collapsed in 2017. The bay is known for its dramatic coastal landscape, the Inland Sea, and the \u201eBlue Hole,\u201c a popular diving spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the summer, you'll find many stalls and food trucks here, and there's also a nice restaurant. Below the restaurant is a small museum, the Dwejra Marine Environmental Education Centre. It only costs 1.50 EUR to enter, but it impressively tells the history of the area, including the collapse of the Azure Window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fungus Rock is a large rock formation in Dwejra Bay, which has been designated as a nature reserve. The rock was named after a rare plant that grows there. Fungus Rock is officially considered its own island of Malta, which is uninhabited. However, it is just a gigantic rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This natural lagoon in San Lawrenz is connected to the open sea by an 80-meter-long tunnel, which represents a unique geological formation. The tunnel is very popular with divers as it leads to a beautiful dive spot with rich marine flora and fauna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Inland Sea itself is a small, roundish sea separated from the open sea by high cliffs. On its shore, there are a few fishermen's huts, and it's not unusual to see traditional \u201eluzzu\u201c boats floating on the calm water. These boats are also used to ferry visitors to the open sea through the tunnel, a very popular activity among tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Due to its beauty and uniqueness, the Inland Sea, as part of the Dwejra area, has been declared a site of special scientific interest and is designated as a special conservation area. This ensures its protection and preservation for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the capital of the island of Gozo, Malta. It is located in the heart of Gozo, making it very easily accessible from any point on the island. All roads lead to Victoria \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n Approximately 6,900 people live here, making Victoria the most populous locality on Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The area around the city, located on a hill near the center of the island, has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. To distinguish it from the city of Rabat on the main island of Malta, it is usually known as Rabat, Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is certainly one of the best sights in Gozo. The Citadel is a medieval fortress built on the foundations of an earlier Roman city. It was renovated in the 17th century and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A magnificent Baroque church, known for its impressive interior with elaborate marble work and frescoes. It is one of the few churches on Gozo that should be on your list, unless you love churches. In that case, you can certainly indulge yourself all over the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In front of the basilica, on St. George Square, there are many good restaurants and cafes. From here, you can also walk through many picturesque alleys and soak up the charm of Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Villa Rundle Gardens are a beautiful public park in Victoria, Gozo. Originally laid out by British General Leslie Rundle in 1910, the gardens offer a green oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. They are known for their variety of plants and trees, including palm trees and other exotic species, flourishing in well-maintained flowerbeds. With their shaded avenues, pretty fountains, and relaxing seating areas, Villa Rundle Gardens are a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to unwind and enjoy nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It's great for families here, as there's also a playground. Events are also held regularly (almost every weekend), and they are all free. This includes Christmas and Easter markets, Valentine's Day celebrations, a honey festival, and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
