Imposing, weathered rock formations, exciting gorges, dense forests, and vast meadows; this is the Mullerthal Trail in the Little Luxembourg Switzerland region. This is the third time I'm going to this region for hiking. My gear is packed for a 1-day or 2-day trip, depending on how the weather plays out. We're starting at the Heringer Mill (Mills)<\/a>, which can be easily reached by GPS by entering M\u00fcllerthal. From here, we go to Echternach Gare and we walk the M\u00fcllerthal Trail Route 2<\/a> counterclockwise. So our hike today should be around 25 km.<\/p>\n

At the Heringer Millen Tourist Office, we are greeted with a friendly \u201eMoein! H\u00e4erzlech w\u00ebllkomm!\u201c We grab a bus schedule for the next day (just in case) and set off.<\/p>\n

The first stop is Schiessent\u00fcmpel, a picturesque waterfall on the Black Ernz. Here, the water shoots over a rock ledge in three streams into a rocky basin below, before continuing towards M\u00fcllerthal. An idyllic stone and wood bridge, as well as the surrounding rocks, make Schiessent\u00fcmpel a popular excursion destination in the region. Therefore, you'll usually find quite a few people here. So much for the idyll. \ud83d\ude42 However, it's still a great spot for taking pictures, and you could also conveniently stop at the nearby parking lot to save yourself the exciting hike.<\/p>\n

We continue into the forest towards the east, where a breathtaking rocky landscape awaits us. These bear names like Goldkaul, Eulenburg, and Goldfaralay, which are somehow traceable to legends and myths. Anyway, due to weathering processes, these sandstone rocks partly look like bizarre figures or faces. Scary! But it's best to plan some extra time for taking photos, climbing the rocks, and finding a sensible way to climb down. It's fun and you can quickly spend half an hour climbing to various viewpoints.<\/p>\n

Shortly before the village of Consdorf, the path leads to a hiking parking lot. It's one of the many starting points for the M\u00fcllerthal Trail. Across the parking lot, you reach the Consdorfer Mill, which we'll skip today. We continue on to one of the most spectacular rock crevices in the region: the Kohlscheuer. Very cool, because the hiking trail runs directly through this rock crevice. The word \u201eEntr\u00e9e\u201c shows you where the start is. The rock crevice is quite narrow and pitch black. You should therefore carry your backpack in front of you and bring a flashlight. I recommend a headlamp so you have your hands free. If this passage is too narrow and tight for you, you can also comfortably walk around the outside of the rock. But then you'll miss out \ud83d\ude09 It's also a great way to cool off.<\/p>\n

After Consdorf comes the village of Scheidgen, where you have some places to stop. However, since I've never stopped there, I can only assume that you can comfortably have a drink there and experience Luxembourgish village life. Pure speculation \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

We continue our hike, passing by great photo spots again and again. For example, a large cornfield. Since there's no bed available to rest there, we take photos and have a drink. The weather is great today anyway, and we enjoy the warm sunrays and the pleasant smell of chamomile, which is planted in front of one of the many cornfields. Yummy!<\/p>\n

We take our \u201ebig break\u201c at the \u201eM\u00e9chelskierch,\u201c the Michels Church. There, in a cave between rocks, lived a hermit named Michel at the end of the 18th century. Charitable people from the village brought him food so that Michel prayed for them, as a sign told us. Anyway, we brought our own food. We stuff ourselves to regain our strength, linger there a little longer, and set off for Echternach, where we arrived after a good 9 hours, somewhat tired and worn out. The last two kilometers drag on a bit. By now, 27 km have been covered, and we look for a cozy hotel where we can finally take a refreshing shower.<\/p>\n

We'll wind down the evening with a glass of wine and enjoy the cooling summer thunderstorm.<\/p>\n

Since it's actually pouring buckets the next day, we decide to take the bus back from Echternach to M\u00fcllerthal. You do this with line 411 from Echternach Gare. Since Luxembourg is generally quite affordable, the fare of 2 EUR for about 25 minutes of travel doesn't surprise us. In Consdorf, you have to get off this bus, at the \u201eOp de Gare\u201c stop, and walk back up the street for five minutes to the school. Then, \u201eat some point,\u201c a blue bus arrives that takes you to M\u00fcllerthal. Great organization and well thought out.<\/p>\n

So we had a great hike and were able to really enjoy both days.<\/p>\n
