Known as the most beautiful federal state in the world, we spent our vacation in Saarland this time. Just in time for Easter, we\u00a0we continued on and drove through Basel and Alsace into Saarland. Just the drive alone already felt like a vacation. We encountered some Easter traffic and needed about an hour longer than usual, but we arrived relaxed in beautiful Kastel towards the evening. Kastel belongs to the district of St. Wendel and the municipality of Nonnweiler. It is located in the north of Saarland, right on the edge of the Hunsr\u00fcck-Hochwald National Park<\/a>. This makes Kastel an ideal starting point for hikes and leisurely strolls.<\/p>\n

Vacation in Saarland<\/h1>\n

Das Saarland ist das kleinste Bundesland Deutschlands. Aber es hat einiges zu bieten. Neben dem ber\u00fchmten Wahrzeichen „Die Saarschleife“, kann man im S\u00fcden des Landes mit V\u00f6lklingen und Neunkirchen zwei wichtige Orte der saarl\u00e4ndischen Industriegeschichte besuchen. Allen voran die V\u00f6lklinger H\u00fctte, die als UNESCO-Welterbe heute viele Ausstellungen und kulturelle Events beherbergt. Die Landeshauptstadt Saarbr\u00fccken l\u00e4dt zum Shoppen ein und zum Nightlife ein. Aber auch Saarlouis ist gerade f\u00fcr letzteres bekannt. In der Saarlouiser Altstadt findet man Kneipe an Kneipe und zwischendrin viele sch\u00f6ne kleine Clubs oder Lounges.<\/p>\n

Besides shopping and celebrating, the Saarland offers an impressive number of hiking trails. Not only on the 410 km long Saar-Hunsr\u00fcck Trail<\/a>\u00a0You can relax and unwind. You can also exert yourself and\/or enjoy nature on numerous smaller premium hiking trails, such as the Hochwaldpfad in Weiskirchen or the L\u00fcckner-Weg, which starts in Oppen. Hunnenring – Ringwall von Otzenhausen<\/h1>\n

Der Ringwall von Otzenhausen, der volkst\u00fcmlich auch „Hunnenring“ genannt wird, befindet sich im \u00e4ussersten Norden des Saarlandes. Ein paar Schritte weiter und man befindet sich in Rheinland-Pfalz. Hier beginnt der Saar-Hunsr\u00fcck Nature Park<\/a>. We started from the forest parking lot in Otzenhausen and walked towards the Ringwall. After about 1.8 km, you reach this impressive structure. A stone staircase allows you to cross over. Afterwards, you walk back down behind the rampart to a forest path that leads you back to the parking lot. The shortest loop is about 4 km long. We chose this one because the weather wasn't cooperating 100%% that day.<\/p>\n

Der Ringwall selbst ist aus der Zeit 5. – 1. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Nat\u00fcrlich diente er als Schutz f\u00fcr die damals dort ans\u00e4ssigen Kelten. Irgendwann nach dem Gallischen Krieg wurde er verlassen und dient seitdem als Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeit \ud83d\ude42 So oder so \u00e4hnlich wird es gewesen sein. Details \u00fcber den Ringwall findet man an vielen Stellen im Netz.<\/p>\n

Now there is a Celtic village right by the forest parking lot. For 2.50 EUR as an adult and a few cents cheaper as a child, you can visit the grounds and get an insight into life back then.<\/p>\n

We didn't do this and returned to the car after an exciting but relaxing hike. The ring fort itself is definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Privacy is also necessary<\/h1>\n

We spent the rest of our holiday week visiting friends and family. Since it was Easter, there were of course many eggs to find and gifts to distribute. Therefore, we didn't undertake any other activities this time.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h1>\n

Holidays in Saarland are usually very cozy. The nature there is unique and partly untouched. The small, sometimes picturesque villages reflect that cozy life that many city dwellers might dream of. Far from densely populated areas and rush hour, you can relax, unwind, and enjoy life in Saarland.<\/p>\n
