Two Lakes Hike Arosa

The mountain world offers so much beauty. At the very top of my list are the mountain lakes. And so, on a wonderful August weekend, I'm out and about in Arosa, hiking the Two Lakes Hike Arosa. When wanderlust really grabs you, this is an ideal roughly three-hour circular hike that passes two beautiful mountain lakes – Schwellisee and Älplisee.

Arrival

Two Lakes hike Arosa

If you arrive by Rhaetian Railway, you can first take a leisurely hike through Arosa and Innerarosa, or during the main season, you can also take the bus to Innerarosa to the Hörnliair.
We arrived by car and parked directly in Innerarosa. From there, we walked to the Hörnlibahn and started our hike towards Schwellisee.

Schwellisee – Two Lakes Hike Arosa

Swelling lake

From the Hörnli Express valley station You'll hike up to Schwellensee on well-maintained and well-signposted hiking trails. The ascent is easy and also suitable for families with children. In total, you'll climb 100 meters and reach Schwellensee in just under an hour. Of course, this is without extended photo shoots 🙂

We, that's Manuel and Anna from the Saarland and I, will circle the lake once, enjoy the view, and then head towards the slightly higher Älplisee.

Alpine lake

Alplisee

For a two-lake hike in Arosa, you naturally need a second lake. This one is beautifully situated at 2156 meters above sea level in a high alpine environment. Both lakes are fed by the Plessur River, which later also flows through Chur and flows into the Alpine Rhine.

From Älplisee, you have a clear view of the Parpaner Rothorn and thus of the Lenzerheide region. This lake is particularly popular with photographers due to the reflection of the magnificent mountain world on the water's surface. We too take countless photos, which for us amateurs all look the same later on.

By the way, swimming is allowed in both lakes. However, both lakes are also ice-cold in the summer and therefore only for the daring. Nevertheless, we see a girl who actually dives into the lake.

  1. Mega beautiful pictures! I've been to Arosa and Lenzerheide several times, but never for hiking. Your pictures really make me want to go on a hiking trip in spring or summer. I'm running out of ideas for weekend trips anyway, and Arosa is still reasonably easy to reach from Zurich (a little over 2 hours by car). Thanks for the tip!

Look under Travel / Europe / Switzerland, where you'll find the Sightseeing Switzerland posts with many tips for day trips. Unfortunately, not everything can be implemented right now, but there's surely something there for you.

Take care and have fun hiking... the weather will be nice soon too =)

And even though spring is taking a break right now, it's surely time for a „sunny“ outing soon. I'm already looking forward to it!
