I love it. I'm super excited about a post for you about the sights in Gozo. We've already visited so many here and are thrilled with what this paradise in the Mediterranean has to offer. In my opinion, Gozo, Malta's sister island, offers much more than Malta itself. Here you can relax and enjoy your vacation or life in a completely laid-back way. 🙂
The locals are super nice, there are countless great restaurants, and the hospitality of the Gozitans ensures an unforgettable stay on this wonderful island.
I couldn't find a complete list of all the places in Gozo in German, which is why I got the idea for this post. For each place, you'll find the best sights, provided we've already visited them. A few are still missing, and I'll add them here gradually.
History of Gozo and a few facts
Before I give you a list of places on Gozo and introduce you to the best sights on Gozo, I'd like to share a few facts about Gozo's history and location.
Gozo Maltese Gozois located in the heart of the Mediterranean, northwest of Malta, and is 67 km2 Gross. If you want to walk around it, you'll cover about 54 km, on well-maintained hiking trails, by the way.
As of 2023, the population is approximately 31,000 people, who speak Maltese and English, both of which are official languages in Malta. Victoria is the capital and is located exactly in the center of the island. In winter, the temperature here is around 8 degrees Celsius, and in summer, it rarely exceeds 30 degrees. However, the sun here is very strong, so you should be prepared accordingly.
The economy of Gozo is based on agriculture, fishing, tourism, and handicrafts. Typical products from Gozo include salt and honey.
The first people settled here around 5,000 BC. With the Ggantija Temple, there is a building here that is older than the pyramids of Giza. In the Middle Ages, Gozo was under the rule of various powers, including the Arabs, whose influences still shape the island's cultural and social fabric today. Arab influences are particularly visible in the Maltese language, which is one of the oldest languages in Europe.
In a travel guide, it would read as follows: Maltese is a unique blend of Semitic and Romance elements with a strong Arabic core, enriched by influences from Italian, English, and French. Oh yes 🙂
All 18 locations on Gozo
The locations are sorted alphabetically and the list should be kept up-to-date for the coming years. 🙂
The data is all from 2023.

Attractions in Ghajnsielem
Our Lady of Loreto Parish Church

This impressive church in the heart of Ghajnsielem is known for its beautiful architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Additionally, in front of the church, there are always wonderful installations for Christmas, Easter, and special holidays in general. Sights of Gharb
Ta‘ Pinu National Shrine

This is one of the most important religious sites in Malta and Gozo. The Basilica of Ta‘ Pinu is known for its impressive architecture and its significant role as a place of worship and pilgrimage.
2. Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village

A beautiful little „craft village“ located just outside Gharb, if you're heading towards St. Lawrence. Here, traditional Gozitan crafts are displayed, and you can buy Gozo salt packaged in charming little yurt bags. The ideal souvenir.
3. Wied il-Mielaħ Window

The famous Azure Window sadly collapsed in a storm in 2017. Unfortunately, I never got to see it in person, but I have visited the Wied il-Mielaħ Window multiple times. It is at least as impressive as the Azure Window. It's a limestone arch window, very close to the Saltpans of Gozo. You can easily plan a hike from Gharb here.
Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady

The Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a significant religious edifice in Gharb. The impressive building, constructed between 1699 and 1729, is built in the Baroque style and sits at the heart of the village of Gharb. The basilica is most renowned for its rich interior, which includes a number of ornate frescoes and statues. With its rich historical heritage and spiritual significance, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a must-see for anyone visiting Gharb and the island of Gozo.
In the winter, there's even an ice skating rink in front of the church, made of artificial ice, of course. But our kids had a lot of fun here. We've been to the ice rink countless times.
Ghasri (L-Għasri)
Location and Population
Ghasri is located in the west of Gozo and is the smallest village on the island, with a population of about 525 inhabitants. It is even the second smallest locality in Malta. Ghasri is nestled between the hills of iż-Żebbuġ and Għammar.
History of Ghasri
The name has Arabic origins and is likely connected to the verb ‚to press,‘ suggesting this could be an area where olives were pressed for oil.
The village church, designed by a local priest, Dun Guzepp Diacono, was built in the early twentieth century (1903-16) and is dedicated to Christ the Redeemer. The village was established as an independent parish in 1921.
Sights of Ghasri
Ta‘ Gurdan Lighthouse

This striking lighthouse is located on a hill near Ghasri. From there, you have a magnificent view of the whole of Gozo. We are looking directly at the lighthouse from our parking spot; it's still active. However, thanks to GPS, nobody uses the lighthouse for navigation anymore, of course. It is the only lighthouse on Gozo. There are beautiful hiking trails from Ghasri and the surrounding villages up to the lighthouse. I once walked the route from Zebbug.
Għasri Valley Tal

This narrow, deep valley leads to a secluded bay popular with swimmers and divers. The steep cliffs and crystal-clear water make it a unique spot for a refreshing dip. The bay is truly idyllic and a great photo stop for anyone traveling on Gozo.
Basilica of Saints Mary and Joseph
This small but impressive church in the center of Ghasri is a beautiful example of religious architecture on Gozo.
Kercem
Location and Population
Kercem is located southwest of Victoria, the capital of Gozo, and borders the picturesque Lunzjata Valley. About 1,700 people live here.
History of Kercem
The name Kercem likely derives from the Maltese word „Kremin,“ referring to the flowering vineyards that once covered the area.
Sights of Kercem
I will add to this list shortly.
Marsalforn
Location and Population
Marsalforn is located on the north coast of Gozo and is one of the island's most popular seaside resorts. 1,200 people live here year-round, but this number is significantly exceeded in the summer.
History of Marsalforn
The history of Marsalforn dates back to the Roman era, and by the 16th century, its harbor played a significant role for Gozo. From here, food was loaded from Sicily, and travelers took passage to ports like Licata and others in Europe. The importance of Marsalforn grew so significantly in the late 16th and early 17th centuries that the Knights of St. John, the then rulers of Malta, considered dismantling the old Citadel of Gozo in the center of the island and building a new city above the harbor.
However, due to the resistance of the residents of Gozo, this plan was never realized. They argued that they had too few financial resources to raise further taxes to fund the move, and the challenges of relocating from Victoria Rabat to Marsalforn would be too great. With the rise of Mġarr as the ferry port between Gozo and Malta and the construction of defensive towers to secure the waterways between Gozo and Malta, Marsalforn lost its importance and remained for many centuries as a quiet fishing village inhabited only by fishermen and their families.
Attractions of Marsalforn
Marsalforn Bay
This bay is a popular spot for swimming, diving, and boating. There are also numerous restaurants and cafes along the promenade, serving fresh fish and seafood. A small beach invites sunbathing. We love spending our afternoons here.
Mgarr
Location and Population
Mgarr is located on the southeast coast of Gozo and is the island's main ferry port, with regular connections to the main island of Malta. Fewer than 500 residents live here, as it is purely a harbor area.
History of Mgarr
Mgarr was once a quiet fishing village, but it has since developed into a bustling harbor area with the construction of the modern ferry terminal.
Attractions of Mgarr
Mgarr Harbour

The harbor itself is the main attraction here. In addition to the yachts and boats to admire in the summer, there are also some very good restaurants and a grand hotel with a great view of the harbor.
2. Fort Chambray

An impressive fortress on a hill above the harbor, built in the mid-18th century. Today, it houses a luxury residential complex and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

Location and Population
Munxar is located in the south of the island of Gozo and borders the village of Sannat. Munxar has a population of approximately 1,200 inhabitants.
History of Munxar
The name Munxar means „saw“ in German, and the teeth of a saw are also visible in the village's coat of arms. It is a relatively new village, founded only in the 20th century.
Sights of Munxar

From here, you can start many beautiful trails. From here, you'll either walk along the coast or pass through beautiful villages.

Location and Population
Nadur is located in the east of Gozo and is one of the largest municipalities here. Around 4,500 residents live here year-round.
History of Nadur
The name Nadur, derived from the Maltese word „nadur,“ means „lookout“ and refers to the viewpoints on the town's hills, which offer expansive views of the sea and the surrounding landscape.
Sights of Nadur
1. Ta‘ Kenuna Tower

This botanical garden and watchtower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Gozo, Comino, and mainland Malta. The tower was originally built as a telegraph station and now serves as a viewpoint. It is the only botanical garden in Gozo and is especially recommended in the months of March to early May, as the whole island is beautifully green then. One of the best sights in Gozo in spring.
Ramla Bay

Just a short drive from Nadur, this wide sandy beach is one of the most beautiful and popular in Gozo, and even in Malta. The bay is known for its red sand and crystal-clear waters, and is a great place for swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking. Ramla Beach is the largest beach in Gozo and we come here at least once a week. At least in the summer.
3. Mixed Cave

The Tal-Mixta Cave is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its breathtaking views of Ramla Bay and Ramla Beach. The Tal-Mixta Cave is often confused with Calypso's Cave, which is currently closed to the public. If you are driving from Nadur towards Ramla Beach, turn right towards the cave. There is a small parking lot approximately 300 meters before the cave entrance.
4. Daħlet Qorrot Beach

Daħlet Qorrot Beach is a secluded beach (hidden gem!!) in the north of the island. The bay is quite cool and has crystal clear, deep blue water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Adjacent to the beach are traditional fishermen's huts carved into the limestone cliffs, which give the place a special charm. With its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty, Daħlet Qorrot is a perfect retreat for relaxation and enjoying nature.
Qala (Il-Qala)
Location and Population
Qala is located in the east of Gozo and is the easternmost village on the island. It overlooks the Maltese island of Comino and the blue sea between them. Qala is the village furthest from the capital Victoria and closest to the rest of the Maltese archipelago. Approximately 2,000 people live here.
History of Qala
Qala is first mentioned in a 15th-century portolan in the Vatican Library. Its name refers to the ‚Qala‘ (‚harbour‘) of Ħondoq ir-Rummien. The development of the present-day settlement began in the second half of the 17th century.
Except for a few protected bays like Ħondoq ir-Rummien, the coast of Qala is mostly rugged. Sea caves along the coast, including Għar Minka, are only accessible by boat.
Sights of Qala
Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay
This small bay is popular with locals and tourists alike for swimming and snorkeling. It offers a magnificent view of the island of Comino and the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Ta‘ Sannat
Location and Population
Sannat is located in the southern part of Gozo and is known for its impressive coastal cliffs. Currently, about 2,100 people live in Sannat.
History of Sannat
Sannat is known for its old farmhouses and mills, as well as the Ta‘ Cenc cliffs, which are protected as an archaeological site.
Sights of Sannat
Ta‘ Ċenċ Cliffs (Sanap Cliffs)

These spectacular cliffs are a nature reserve and home to a variety of birds. They offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and are a popular hiking spot. By the way, I can recommend the hike from Xlendi. You walk beautifully along the coast on small but well-maintained hiking trails that end at the Sanap Cliffs. From here, you can walk back to Xlendi via country paths and the road. A beautiful hike.
Santa Lucia
Location and Population
Santa Luċija borders Victoria and Kerċem. Only about 300 inhabitants live here.
History of Saint Lucia
The village was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse, an early Christian martyr. The residents of Santa Lucia are proud of their village and keep its traditions alive.
The area was once known for its freshwater springs and is still one of the greenest areas on Gozo.
Sights of Santa Lucia

Saint Lawrence
Location and Population
San Lawrenz is located in the west of Gozo, with a population of about 750 inhabitants.
History of Saint Lawrence
San Lawrenz is one of two villages on Gozo to have taken their name from their patron saint. The other is the nearby hamlet of Santa Luċija. San Lawrenz was elevated to parish status on 15 March 1893. Prior to this date, the area was known as Ta‘ Ċangura, possibly after a local family name or nickname.
The exact founding date of this area is unknown, but the name Ta‘ Ċangura can be traced back before the siege of Gozo, i.e., before July 1551.
Attractions of Saint Lawrence
Dwejra Bay

Dwejra Bay is arguably the most famous attraction in San Lawrenz. This is where the „Azure Window“ was located, an iconic rock arch that sadly collapsed in 2017. The bay is known for its dramatic coastal landscape, the Inland Sea, and the „Blue Hole,“ a popular diving spot.
In the summer, you'll find many stalls and food trucks here, and there's also a nice restaurant. Below the restaurant is a small museum, the Dwejra Marine Environmental Education Centre. It only costs 1.50 EUR to enter, but it impressively tells the history of the area, including the collapse of the Azure Window.
2. Fungus Rock

Fungus Rock is a large rock formation in Dwejra Bay, which has been designated as a nature reserve. The rock was named after a rare plant that grows there. Fungus Rock is officially considered its own island of Malta, which is uninhabited. However, it is just a gigantic rock.
3. Inland Sea

This natural lagoon in San Lawrenz is connected to the open sea by an 80-meter-long tunnel, which represents a unique geological formation. The tunnel is very popular with divers as it leads to a beautiful dive spot with rich marine flora and fauna.
The Inland Sea itself is a small, roundish lake separated from the open sea by high cliffs. On its shore, there are a few fishermen's huts, and it's not uncommon to see traditional „luzzu“ boats drifting on the calm waters. These boats are also used to ferry visitors through the tunnel to the open sea, which is a very popular activity among tourists.
Due to its beauty and uniqueness, the Inland Sea, as part of the Dwejra area, has been declared a site of special scientific interest and is designated as a special conservation area. This ensures its protection and preservation for future generations.
Victoria (Rabat)
Location and Population
Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the capital of the island of Gozo, Malta. It is located in the heart of Gozo, making it very easily accessible from any point on the island. All roads lead to Victoria 🙂
Approximately 6,900 people live here, making Victoria the most populous locality on Gozo.
History of Victoria
The area around the city, located on a hill near the center of the island, has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Victoria is the name bestowed by the British government on June 10, 1887, on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, at the request of Pietro Monsignor Pace, the Bishop of Gozo.
Many Gozitans, especially older Gozitans, however, still often refer to it by the name Rabat. To distinguish it from the city of Rabat on the main island of Malta, it is usually known as Rabat, Gozo.
Victoria Attractions
1. The Citadel (Cittadella)
It is certainly one of the best sights in Gozo. The Citadel is a medieval fortress built on the foundations of an earlier Roman city. It was renovated in the 17th century and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Gozo.
2. St. George's Basilica
A magnificent Baroque church, known for its impressive interior with elaborate marble work and frescoes. It is one of the few churches on Gozo that should be on your list, unless you love churches. In that case, you can certainly indulge yourself all over the island.
In front of the basilica, on St. George Square, there are many good restaurants and cafes. From here, you can also walk through many picturesque alleys and soak up the charm of Victoria.
3. Villa Rundle Gardens
Villa Rundle Gardens are a beautiful public park in Victoria, Gozo. Originally laid out by British General Leslie Rundle in 1910, the gardens offer a green oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. They are known for their variety of plants and trees, including palm trees and other exotic species, flourishing in well-maintained flowerbeds. With their shaded avenues, pretty fountains, and relaxing seating areas, Villa Rundle Gardens are a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to unwind and enjoy nature.
It's great for families here, as there's also a playground. Events are also held regularly (almost every weekend), and they are all free. This includes Christmas and Easter markets, Valentine's Day celebrations, a honey festival, and many more.
4. Victoria Playground
A playground in Victoria should not be missed on my list of sights in Gozo. Of course, it's not a typical Gozo sightseeing spot, but for families like us, it's always important that the kids can let off steam.
The playground in Victoria is wonderfully designed, with great play equipment and even a small skate park. Our kids love riding their scooters here.
By the way, there are outdoor training equipment for parents, kind of like in a gym, but outdoors.
5. The Duke - Shopping Mall
The shopping malls in Gozo are small but nice compared to the large ones in Malta. Nevertheless, The Duke is worth seeing. Unlike the old town with its small local boutiques and tourist shops, you'll find more international brands here. But you can still find good bargains from time to time.
At the main entrance of the mall, there's a great restaurant where we regularly eat lunch. I can highly recommend this place for a quick bite.
6. Arkadia Commercial Centre
Also located on Republic Street (the main street in Victoria) is the Arkadia Commercial Centre. There you'll also find great shops for browsing. If the weather is bad (which only happens in winter in Gozo), then Arkadia and The Duke are ideal for a bad weather program in Gozo. Unfortunately, Arkadia only has one McDonald's and no other restaurant to linger in comfortably.
Xaghra
Location and Population
Xaghra is located on a plateau between the valleys of Ramla and Marsalforn, in the north of the island. A total of approximately 4,700 people live here.
History of Xaghra
The history of Xaghra dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the many archaeological sites in the region.
Sights of Xaghra
Ggantija Temple

These megalithic temples are the main attraction of Xaghra. They are considered the oldest freestanding structures in the world and are older than the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. They were built between 3600 and 3200 BC and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
2. Calypso's Cave

Calypso's Cave (Maltese: L-Għar ta‘ Kalipso) is a natural cave located on the western side of Ramla Bay in Xagħra, Gozo. It is believed that this cave is mentioned in Homer's Odyssey—as the cave where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years after his ship was shipwrecked following a violent storm. The cave is currently closed to the public due to fear of collapse. The cave is often mistaken for the Tal‘ Mixta Cave, which is located on the other side of the bay within the limits of the municipality of Nadur.
3. Ramla Bay

Xaghra also offers access to this wonderful sandy beach. This wide sandy beach is one of the most beautiful and popular in Gozo, and even in Malta. The bay is known for its red sand and crystal-clear water, and is a great place for swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking. Ramla Beach is the largest beach in Gozo, and we're here at least once a week. At least in the summer.

4. Ta‘ Kola Windmill
One of the few surviving windmills on the Maltese Islands, built in the 18th century. It now houses a museum that offers an insight into traditional rural life on Gozo.
5. Xerri's Grotto
Xerri's Grotto in Xaghra, Gozo, is an impressive underground cave that was formed over 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. It was discovered in 1923 when a homeowner attempted to dig a well. Today, visitors can marvel at the fascinating stalactites and stalagmites that have been formed over millennia by the penetration of water.
6. Ninu's Cave
Ninu's Cave is a natural underground cavern, known for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa, the son of the landowner, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's geological formations. Visitors can enter the cave and admire the natural wonders up close.
Xewkija
Location and Population
Xewkija is located in the east of the island, near the coast, and has about 3,300 inhabitants.
History of Xewkija
Xewkija, located between Għajnsielem and the capital city Victoria, is the oldest village in Gozo. It was established as the first parish outside of Victoria on November 27, 1678. The name is derived from the Maltese word „Xewk,“ which means „thistles“ or „thorns.“ Xewkija is known for its church, the Rotunda of Xewkija, which is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
Sights of Xewkija
1. The Rotunda of Xewkija
This is the defining feature of Xewkija. The church has a huge dome, which is larger than that of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Inside, visitors can admire impressive frescoes and sculptures, as well as a large organ with over 2000 pipes.
To go up, you pay about 3 EUR admission. It's worth it though, because the view from up there is breathtaking. You can see practically the whole island, all the way over to Malta and Comino.
Xlendi (St. Andrew's Bay)
Location and Population
Xlendi is located in the southwest of the island, in a beautiful bay. The village has about 200 residents who live there year-round.
History of Xlendi
Xlendi was originally a small fishing harbor and has developed into one of the most popular tourist destinations on Gozo in recent decades.
The name Xlendi likely comes from the word „xelandion,“ which means „small ship“ and alludes to the village's fishing tradition.
Things to see in Xlendi
The Xlendi Bay
With its turquoise blue water and pebble beach, the bay in Xlendi is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. There are also some great restaurants here „down“ by the sea, along the promenade. We love spending our lunch break here.
2. The Xlendi Cliffs

A well-maintained hiking trail leads up to the cliffs, offering a breathtaking view of the bay and the sea. The climb is worth it.
3. Xlendi Tower

This watchtower, built in the 17th century by the Knights of St. John, offers a fantastic view of the surroundings.
Zebbug (Iż-Żebbuġ)
Location and Population
Zebbug is located in the northeast of the island of Gozo, on one of the highest elevations on the island. The locals call it „in the mountains“. The municipality of Zebbug has a total of about 2,000 inhabitants.
History of Żebbuġ
The name „Zebbug“ means „olives,“ which indicates the agricultural character of the place. Zebbug is known for its olive groves, which produce some of Malta's finest olives and olive oils.
Attractions of Zebbug
Xwejni Salt Pans

The Xwejni Salt Pans, stretching along the northern coast of Gozo, are an impressive example of traditional, sustainable agriculture and a fascinating destination for visitors to the island. These man-made basins, carved into the flat rock, have been used since Roman times to capture seawater, which then evaporates, leaving behind salt. This salt is then collected, purified, and sold.
The salt pans are not only of industrial and historical interest, but also offer a breathtaking natural landscape, especially at sunrise and sunset when the light is reflected on the shallow pans. Working in the salt pans is arduous and is mostly carried out by local families who pass down the tradition for generations.
The salt is then harvested from around June/July to September, depending on the weather. The Gozo Salt Pans are one of the top attractions in Gozo.
2. Xwejni Bay

Xwejni Bay is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving due to its abundance of marine life. It is also an excellent place for coastal walks, allowing visitors to enjoy the wonderful scenery and impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea. It also offers spectacular sunset views, making it a favored location for photography enthusiasts.

There are two nice restaurants there where we also like to spend our lunch breaks. In addition, there is a small cave here if you walk along the bay. This is an ideal place for families to enjoy a day at the beach.
Bonus Tip - Cumin
Location and Population
The neighboring island of Comino lies in the Gozo Channel, between Malta and Gozo. It is only 3.5 km2 Gross. The island of Comino even has inhabitants. Exactly three people are registered as living there year-round. Comino is not located in Gozo, but it is reachable by boat within a few minutes, so it cannot be missing from my list of sights in Gozo.
History of Comino
In the past, Comino served as a hunting ground and later as a quarantine island. The island's name comes from the wild cumin that once grew here.
Attractions of Comino
Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the main attractions of Comino. It is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
2. St. Mary's Bay
This is where the few inhabitants of the island live. There is also a small campsite and a police station.
3. Hikes – Hiking trails on Comino

The island of Comino is ideal for hiking. Even though there are very few shady spots and it therefore gets very hot in the summer, there are countless hiking trails here. You can easily explore the island in one day. However, it's better to plan a second day for swimming.
Conclusion - Sights in Gozo, the Paradise of the Mediterranean
Now you have a great overview of Gozo and its villages. Ultimately, each place has a pretty village center and one or two great sights. With the Hop On Hop Off bus, you can of course see everything very compactly and quickly, essentially the Gozo Sightseeing Express. If you're only spending one day in Gozo, I recommend it. Even if you have a rental car, the bus tour is a good option. You can start directly at Mgarr harbor and explore Gozo.
Then I wish you many good inspirations for your trip to Gozo or a great vacation, if you're already here. Let me know in the comments what you particularly liked about Gozo and what your favorite sights in Gozo are.
