USA Day 19: It's 12 o'clock, midnight. Awakened by the loudest and most terrible alarm clock imaginable, Dennis sits bolt upright in bed, trying to comprehend what's happening.
In that very moment, Helene starts the first words of her birthday song. Oh my God! THANK YOU, SWEETHEART.
After a few hours of sleep, there was a delicious birthday breakfast, which was actually planned for the room. But somehow that hadn't worked out.
Departure for the Grand Canyon. Today Dennis got to be chauffeured around by Helene.
We found a great route, Desert View, and got a great tip from a ranger for continuing on. We actually found an even more beautiful spot afterward, completely without tourists. Great!
The Grand Canyon is truly impressive and lives up to its name. Unfortunately, you can't capture its dimensions in pictures.
But the two points we originally wanted to visit, Monument Valley and Skywalk, are about 400 km apart. Impossible for a day trip.
Next, we continued to Flagstaff, a historic small town in Arizona. Generally, these small towns are much nicer than LA, Las Vegas, and all those other places.
We're strolling leisurely through the city and winding down the birthday with a delicious dinner.
