Hawaii Day 23: Oh my god! Two dung beetles in the bed. Bed bug alarm! But it was no big deal. One was already dead and The other one, all the way at the other end of the bed. What did we learn?
Don't book a cheap hotel directly in Waikiki. Not even if it's just for one night. Get out of here quickly!
There was breakfast at Starbucks followed by another visit to Pearl Harbor. This time, we were better prepared. We took a bus to the USS Missouri, which was in service until 1991. It was very impressive to see how people lived at sea there for months. The Arizona Memorial was closed today because Hurricane Ana was expected to hit the islands in the coming hours. However, the big storm had not materialized up to this point.
We drove back into town and strolled through the shops a bit. We had a pick-me-up at the Cheesecake Factory. Wow! They really make good cakes there. By then, it was raining decently, just like it should for an island in the tropics. Fortunately, the rain is nice and warm. Towards the afternoon, we headed to the airport. It wasn't entirely clear if we'd be able to fly at all, as the wind had picked up considerably. But at check-in, we received the good news.
ALL FLIGHTS ARE CANCELLED, EXCEPT OURS.
Great! Great???
The airline is trying to make today's last flight to Kauai too. Well, let's go. We had another delicious cocktail at the airport bar and then went to board.
There were only relatively few people on the plane. Was everyone scared then? Never mind, more space for us. At least that way we could also change sides on the plane for once.
The flight was extremely bumpy and turbulent, mainly because it was a small propeller plane. But it was fun and exciting at the same time.
We landed in Lihue, the capital of Kauai, and picked up our car. "Would you like an upgrade?" they asked. From a Ford Focus to a Jeep. "It would make sense on a volcanic island," Dennis said. Helene, however, disagreed and referred to the sales talent of the friendly lady behind the counter. "Okay, then a Ford Focus it is, with an automatic transmission, no all-wheel drive!"
Departure to the hotel and another wow experience. Are we on our honeymoon?
The hotel is insane. We're getting a room on the top floor with a sea view and palm trees below the balcony. The hotel is right on the beach, and we get two free cocktails every day at the pool, which is set ablaze in the evenings. Perfect, you can really relax here!
